GUNI Call for Good Practices

The Global University Network for Innovation has launched a Call for Good Practices in the framework of the 5th International Barcelona Conference on Higher Education “Higher Education’s Commitment to Sustainability: from Understanding to Action”, taking place at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona on 23-26 November 2010.

The Conference is designed to deepen the conceptual definition of the lines of change in higher education to respond to the challenges of sustainability, as well as to identify ways for action. Both facilitate the transition between existing and new educational scenarios consistent with the vision of the sustainability paradigm to move from understanding to action.

The Call for Good Practices aims to make connections between the key ideas being examined in the Conference, with good practices taking place ´on the ground´. The selected good practices will be presented in the parallel sessions at the Conference and will be published in the next Report Higher Education in the World 4.

There will also be an on-line forum in order to debate and prepare the material that will be worked on in the Conference. The aim is to extend the scope of the GUNI Conference by giving voice to individuals and institutions from around the world.

Open Letter to the President of the ECOWAS Commission

Save Nigeria from Looming Political Calamity; the Need for Urgent Intervention in Nigeria’s Constitution and Political Crisis.

The Secretariat of the All-Africa Students Union (AASU) presents its compliments to you and wishes to draw your attention to the current constitutional crisis in Nigeria as a result of the disappearance of President Musa Yar’Adua which has created a power vacuum in the most populous black nation.  We wish to state that the nature of the unfolding crisis demands urgent intervention; the passivity of the ECOWAS at this critical moment may spell doom for the entire West African sub-region if the impending political disaster is allowed to occur unabated.  Immediate pro-active action must be taken to determine how power will be transferred legitimately to the Vice-President with immediate effect in order to steer the course of a nation that has remained without a president for almost three months...more

AASU endorse Brother Muammar Gaddafi of the Republic of Libya as the African Leader of the Year 2009

We wish to convey the endorsement of the Executive Committe, on behalf of the the secretariat of the All-Africa Students Union (AASU), for the rightful selection and confirmation of the Libyan Leader, Muammar Gaddafi as the African Leader of the Year 2009. As an associate member of Africa Renaissance Coalition, (ARCO), AASU considers this choice as very correct and pertinent in view of the purposeful leadership Gaddafi has given in his home country which has greatly transformed the human capital, citizens'welfare and infrastructural development of Libya. His one year as Chairman of the African Union, AU, also gave ideological bite to the relevance of Africa in the comity of Nations. In particular, his struggle which he pursued diligently to have the impoverished Africa continent transformed to a big confederal status of United States of Africa is a far-sightedness and courage par excellence in leadership. This vision really made Gaddafi a true legacy of Kwame Nkrumah, the sage and founder of modern Ghana Republic.

Libya to Host AASU 10th Congress in April 2010

The General Union of Students of Great People of Libya Jamahiriya will be hosting the congress of AASU for the third time in April 2010. GUSPLAJ hosted AASU congress in Tripoli in 1978 and the 9th Congress in the year 2000.

In July 1972, a group of African students met at the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi (now KNUST), Ghana to discuss the issue of unifying all African students in order to better coordinate their efforts towards the socio-economic and political advancement of Africa. This historic meeting laid the foundation for the All Africa Students' Union (AASU), a non-governmental, international student union.

Subsequently, a larger meeting was held in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania in 1973. To concretise the outcome of the Kumasi and Dar-es-Salaam meetings as the first two congresses of AASU, other congresses have been held as follows:

Press Statement for Immediate Release
London, 21 September 2009

We are going to see that we create our own African personality and identity. We again rededicate ourselves in the struggle to emancipate other countries in Africa; for our independence is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of African continent.”

That was the message of Dr Kwame Nkrumah at the midnight on March 5, 1957, at Accra Polo Ground. Today, the whole world will join Africa for the centenary celebration of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Republic of Ghana and one of the pioneer of Africa liberation struggle and unity against imperialism and foreign domination of colonial masters. As we all celebrate the 100 years posthumous birthday of the illustrious son of Africa, Nkrumah is a phenomenon that never dies and we call on African leaders to emulate the ideals, learn from his legacy and imbibe his fighting spirit towards accelerated development of the continent. .....more
